The Spoons began on a warm, sunny afternoon in June, when friends, Paul Harrison and Sherveen Malaki were playing around with tunes. Sherveen said, 'Teachers on dope, Miss Nuttall don't know...' to which Paul replied, 'That Hannah's a ho.' This random collison of words would form the opening to Salty Gloopy Enzymes, The Spoons first single.

Salty Gloopy Enzymes made it to Number 2 in the UK charts, a good result, although it was widely deemed as a very slow week for the music industry. The follow up, 'Munchkin', entered the UK charts at Number 1 and remained at the top spot for 3 weeks, while attaining Number 3 in the US charts. The Spoons became a gangsta rap/80's Pop phenomenon.

The Spoons third single came in the form of 'Clown (The Pee Song)'. Widely regarded as The Spoons most interesting song to date, Clown caused outrage amongst anti-gun groups who found it's lyrics 'disturbing'. With sales hindered by shop after shop refusing to stock the single, The Pee Song only managed Number 12 on the Uk charts; the media storm caused The Spoons not to release Clowns in the US. Despite it's lack of success in the charts, Clowns (The Pee Song) spawned a new dance craze which gripped the clubs of the Mediterranean throughout the Summer of 1999.

The bad press caused by Clowns soon resulted in The Spoons being dropped from their original record label. But, there really is no such thing as bad publicity, as the queue of record companies lining up to sing The Spoons proved.

The gambled paid off when in November, the self-entitled album 'The Spoons' and their fourth singles 'Spoons, Spoons, Spoons' catapulted to the top of the album and single charts, respectively. Spoons, Spoons, Spoons was the best selling single of 1999, staying on top of the charts in both the UK and US for 10 weeks, gaining Christmas and New Year Number 1's in both the UK and US.

Despite only having five songs on their first album, the fans demanded a Spoons tour, and they got it. During the insanity that was to become The Spoons first, and only, tour, all of The Spoons earlier singles re-charted. Spoons, Spoons, Spoons was UK Number 1 for 3 more weeks. In the US, The Spoons occupied #2, #3, #4 and #8, with Munchkin, Spoons, Spoons, Spoons, Salty Gloopy Enzymes and Clown (The Pee Song) respectively.
